Motorcycle environmental sticker in Spain: how to find out which one applies and what to check before buying
A motorcycle’s environmental classification depends on the data recorded by the DGT. Learn how to check it by registration number, validate a used bike’s documents and avoid confusing the sticker with LEZ rules.

Key points
A motorcycle or moped’s environmental sticker should be checked by registration number through Spain’s DGT; it should not be inferred solely from its year, engine size or vehicle type. Before buying, compare the result with the documentation and check the LEZ rules where you plan to ride.
The registration number is the starting point, not the year or engine size
To find out which environmental sticker applies to a particular motorcycle or moped, the practical route is to check its registration number through the DGT environmental sticker service. The check can be carried out even if the vehicle is not registered in the name of the person making the enquiry. This is the relevant check both for an owner and for someone considering a used unit.
You should not turn engine size, the advertised fuel type or year of registration into an automatic conclusion. The environmental classification is the one recorded in the Vehicle Register and is established in relation to emissions level and fuel used. The V-25 sticker only identifies that registered classification: buying or displaying it does not create or change the motorcycle’s category.
The date of first registration in Spain can help put the information about a used vehicle in context, but it does not replace the check. Likewise, an electric or hybrid motorcycle must be recorded with the classification that applies to it in the Register. If the DGT result and the advert’s claim do not match, the transaction should be put on hold until this is clarified.

- First, check the registration number through the DGT.
- Keep the result as a record of the transaction, together with the advert and the documentation reviewed.
- Do not accept a photo of a sticker, a seller’s statement or an inference based on the year as sufficient evidence.
- If your intended use includes an LEZ, also check the rules of the specific municipality before deciding.

Which two-wheeled vehicles are covered by the classification
The environmental criteria in the sticker annex are formulated for “L-category vehicles”. For readers looking for a conventional motorcycle or moped, the practical consequence is to verify individually, by registration number, the classification recorded in the Vehicle Register.
It is not safe to extrapolate one motorcycle’s sticker to another because they share a make, engine size, fuel type or appearance; nor can you infer a moped’s sticker from its age.
The miDGT app displays, among other technical data, engine size, fuel type and environmental sticker. It is useful for comparing what the seller describes with the data recorded for the vehicle, but the sticker that matters for riding is the one associated with the registration number checked.

- Motorcycle: check its registration number, even if it appears to be an identical version of another unit.
- Moped: apply the same document-based approach; do not assume its category because it has a small engine.
- Motorcycle with sidecar or three-wheeled vehicle: also check the registered data for that specific unit.
- If the technical inspection card or registration certificate do not appear to match the advertised vehicle, do not use the sticker as your only buying filter.

Stickers that may apply to a motorcycle or moped
For L-category vehicles, the Zero Emissions category includes battery electric vehicles, extended-range electric vehicles, hydrogen vehicles, plug-in hybrids with an electric range of at least 40 kilometres on the NEDC cycle, and fuel-cell vehicles, provided they are recorded as such in the Register. The registered status matters: technology alone cannot replace the official check.
For L-category vehicles, ECO is reserved for plug-in hybrids with an electric range below 40 kilometres on the NEDC cycle and for non-plug-in hybrids, again when they are recorded with that classification in the Register. For combustion motorcycles and mopeds, category C applies to those registered as Euro 3 or Euro 4, while category B applies to those registered as Euro 2.
When a motor vehicle does not meet the Register requirements for Zero Emissions, ECO, C or B, it falls into category A. There is no physical sticker for this final category. Therefore, the absence of a visible sticker does not by itself prove that a motorcycle is category A: its holder may simply not have bought or displayed one.
| Sticker or category | Criteria applicable to L-category vehicles | What to check before buying | Interpretation limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zero Emissions | BEV, REEV, hydrogen vehicles, fuel-cell vehicles or PHEVs with a minimum 40 km range on the NEDC cycle, classified as such in the Register | Check by registration number and review the unit’s documentary data | Advertised technology does not replace the registered classification |
| ECO | PHEVs with a range below 40 km on the NEDC cycle or HEVs, classified as such in the Register | Check by registration number and ensure it is consistent with the documentation | It is not enough for the seller to describe the motorcycle as hybrid |
| C | L-category vehicles registered as Euro 3 or Euro 4 | Check DGT information and the unit’s documentation | The year or engine size alone do not prove the sticker |
| B | L-category vehicles registered as Euro 2 | Check DGT information and the unit’s documentation | A photographed sticker does not confirm the registered data |
| A, no physical sticker | Motor vehicle that does not meet the conditions for Zero Emissions, ECO, C or B | Check result and registered status | Not seeing a sticker does not prove that it belongs to this category |

- Zero Emissions: check the technology and, above all, that this classification is recorded in the Register.
- ECO: do not confuse being a hybrid with an automatic category; the classification must be registered.
- C: L-category vehicles registered as Euro 3 or Euro 4.
- B: L-category vehicles registered as Euro 2.
- A: vehicles that do not meet the above conditions; they have no physical sticker.
How to verify a used motorcycle before signing
The check must bring together the environmental enquiry and the unit’s documented identity. Ask for the registration number before travelling to view it or paying a deposit, and check it with the DGT. Then compare that motorcycle with its registration certificate and ITV card or technical inspection card. The registration certificate identifies ownership, while the technical inspection card confirms that the vehicle is approved for road use.
Check that the registration number and basic data in the documents match the advertised unit. miDGT can be used to view data such as engine size, fuel type and environmental sticker, which can help identify mismatches in the commercial description. The date of first registration in Spain also appears in the DGT’s basic vehicle report, but it should be treated as contextual information, not as a shortcut for assigning a sticker.
Before acquiring the vehicle, request the DGT’s full vehicle report. The DGT itself recommends doing so to check for encumbrances; the basic report, meanwhile, warns of issues that would prevent a transfer or road use. A favourable environmental category does not offset an issue that makes it impossible to register the motorcycle in your name or use it legally.

- Ask for the registration number and check the sticker before committing any money.
- Examine the registration certificate: it should allow you to verify ownership.
- Examine the ITV card or technical inspection card: it confirms road-use approval.
- Compare the registration number, engine size, fuel type and sticker with the advert.
- Request the DGT full vehicle report before buying to check for encumbrances.
- If there is a difference between the advert, documents and enquiry result, require it to be clarified before signing or paying.
Where to get the sticker and how to display it
Once the classification has been confirmed, the environmental sticker can be obtained at Correos post offices. To issue it, Correos requires the registration certificate and the national ID document of the holder or an authorised person.
The V-25 identifies the classification that the motorcycle already has in the Vehicle Register. Therefore, if you detect an error or discrepancy, the useful step is not to buy another sticker: you should first check the registered information with the DGT. Keep the registration certificate and technical inspection card as comparison documents, especially if the sticker influenced the purchase.
The requirement to display the sticker visibly may be expressly established by the competent authority in its regulatory instrument. If the motorcycle has no windscreen, the Regulation states that it must be placed in a clearly visible location. Before attaching it permanently, check the rule that applies where you usually ride.

- Confirm the registered classification before requesting the sticker.
- At Correos, provide the registration certificate and ID document of the holder or authorised person.
- Do not interpret buying the sticker as a change of category.
- Without a windscreen, the rules provide for placing it in a clearly visible location when it is required.
The sticker does not guarantee access to an LEZ
Low-emission zones are defined and regulated through municipal rules. Their framework allows each local authority to establish prohibitions or restrictions on access, circulation and parking according to pollution potential, using the environmental classification in the General Vehicle Regulations. It also allows exceptions in duly justified cases.
Consequently, having a B, C, ECO or Zero Emissions sticker does not by itself amount to a general and identical right of entry into every LEZ. Before buying a motorcycle to commute to work or study, or to make deliveries in a city, check the current local ordinance and specifically verify the conditions affecting motorcycles or mopeds.
The buying decision improves if you do this in reverse of the usual order: first define the municipalities and type of journey you will make regularly; then check each candidate’s classification by registration number; finally, compare local rules on access, circulation, parking and possible exceptions. This avoids choosing only on the basis of the sticker and discovering a relevant usage restriction afterwards.

- Identify the LEZs through which you need to ride regularly.
- Check the current municipal rules in each locality.
- Review access, circulation and parking separately.
- Check whether any applicable exceptions exist, without assuming that they do.
- Rule out a unit if its classification or the local rules do not suit your intended use.
Can I find out a motorcycle’s environmental sticker using only the registration number?
Yes. The DGT allows you to check the environmental sticker using the registration number, even when the vehicle is not registered in the name of the person making the enquiry.
Is an old motorcycle without a sticker necessarily category A?
No. The physical absence of a sticker does not prove the category. Category A has no physical sticker, but a motorcycle classified as B, C, ECO or Zero Emissions may not display one because it has not been requested or fitted.
Does the date of first registration determine a motorcycle’s environmental sticker?
It should not be used as the sole criterion. The date of first registration in Spain is available in the DGT’s basic vehicle report, but the environmental classification is determined by the data recorded in the Vehicle Register.
Where can I request an environmental sticker for a motorcycle?
It can be obtained at Correos post offices. Correos requires the registration certificate and the national ID document of the holder or an authorised person.
Can I always enter any LEZ with a C sticker?
Not necessarily. LEZs are defined and regulated by local councils through municipal rules, which may set restrictions on access, circulation and parking, as well as justified exceptions.
