Motorcycle luggage for touring: how to choose cases, saddlebags and bags without overloading your bike

The right combination is not the one with the most litres

For a short break, a compatible tank bag can handle the items you need within easy reach, while a saddlebag or compact case can carry clothing. On a trip lasting several days, two side solutions make it possible to separate luggage between both sides; a top case can complement the setup if the motorcycle, mounting system and accessory itself allow it. The decision should not start with the advertised volume, but with published loads and documented compatibility.

Spain's DGT reminds riders that motorcycles are not intended for transporting loads and that luggage can cause imbalance. Therefore, increasing capacity does not mean you can fill the luggage without considering the published instructions. Each bag, mount and accessory is part of a setup that can affect the motorcycle's stability and handling.

As a scale reference, BMW states more than 73 litres for the aluminium case set for the R 1300 GS and R 1300 GS Adventure: 37 litres on the left and 36.5 on the right. This figure applies to that system and those motorcycles, not as a volume recommendation for every model or as an indication of permissible weight.

• Weekend trips: look for easy access and avoid fitting unnecessary systems for the volume you will actually carry.
• Several days: split luggage between both sides and consult the manufacturer's instructions on load distribution.
• Mixed daily and touring use: consider how long it takes to remove the setup and whether you can take the luggage off without leaving the motorcycle with mounts that do not suit your usual use.

Before buying: check your motorcycle and luggage documentation

Consult the available documentation for your motorcycle, the mount and every luggage item. If the manual or labels for the setup publish maximum loads, conditions of use or mounting points, follow those instructions for that specific combination.

The BMW R 1250 R manual illustrates this method well: it refers you to the inside label of each case and the top case to find their maximum permissible load and the speed limit for the combination. It also warns that uneven loading and insufficient tyre pressure impair the motorcycle's handling at high speed. The specific figure shown on your motorcycle or accessory is the one that must take precedence.

In Spain, the General Traffic Regulations require loads and their accessories to be positioned and secured so that they cannot fall or shift dangerously, compromise stability, or conceal lighting, signalling devices or the registration plate. This is a check worth making before every ride, not only on the day the system is fitted.

• Check whether your motorcycle manual includes instructions for luggage and tyre pressure when loaded.
• If the manual publishes a mass limit applicable with luggage and occupants, find it and follow that instruction.
• On the BMW R 1250 R, read the inside labels of the cases and top case before filling them.
• Do not assume that an accessory valid for a previous generation is valid for the current one.

Side cases, saddlebags, top cases and tank bags: what to compare

Side cases and saddlebags are designed to carry a load on both sides of the rear part of the frame, as described by the DGT. Their main purchasing criterion is to check the documentation for the exact setup reference and ensure it meets the published load instructions for the motorcycle and accessory. Before choosing between a rigid or soft solution, check how it mounts, the capacity and load declared by the manufacturer, how it protects contents from water, and the type of closure it has.

A top case concentrates luggage behind the rider. SHAD states that fitting a case to a motorcycle requires a model-specific mounting kit and, for the top cases in its system, also a mounting rack. It is practical for complementing a system, but requires checking the permitted load for that position and for the specific combination.

A tank bag keeps documents and frequently used items close to the rider. However, GIVI warns for Tanklock that you must check the bag does not affect the original riding conditions, especially because of possible handlebar interference. Therefore, check for potential interference in line with the manufacturer's instructions before loading it and before setting off.

Water resistance and security must be read literally in the product specification. For example, GIVI describes its XSPACE as water-resistant and offers the Smart Security Lock as a separately purchasable option. A lock should not automatically be understood as anti-theft protection, nor should the term “water-resistant” be treated as a promise of undeclared waterproofing.

• Side cases: suitable when you need to split the load; compare the system documentation and the space available around the exhaust and bodywork.
• Top case: check the mounting kit, the rack if the system documentation requires one, and the limits for its specific combination.
• Tank bag: useful for quick access, but only if it does not interfere with the handlebars or riding.
• Soft or rigid system: decide based on mounting, closure, declared water protection and removal, not on a generic label.

Real compatibility: check the motorcycle, generation, mount and configuration

The word “universal” does not replace checking part references. SHAD defines the mounting kit as the connecting element between the motorcycle and the case or bag, and distinguishes between solutions for top cases, side cases and tank bags. In practice, you must identify the exact model, model year or generation, and the configuration of your motorcycle before buying any component.

Manufacturer configurators are a useful first check when they expressly identify the motorcycle. GIVI's, for example, lists accessories for the Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1000 for model years 2024 to 2026, including saddlebags and tank bags. This shows why you need to check the published model range rather than choosing solely by the motorcycle's commercial name.

Also consult the manufacturer's instructions if the exhaust, grab handles, seat, previous accessories or passenger seat may affect the setup. If you cannot confirm the complete reference for the motorcycle, mount and luggage, postpone the purchase or ask the seller or manufacturer for confirmation.

• Note the make, model, generation and model year before looking for the accessory.
• Check separately the reference for the mount, the rack where applicable, and the case or bag.
• Consult the setup instructions if your configuration includes a seat, grab handles, previous accessories or a passenger seat.
• With a tank bag fitted, check for possible handlebar interference in line with the manufacturer's instructions.

Distribute weight so the trip does not become a handling problem

The BMW R 1250 R manual recommends placing heavy items as low and as close as possible to the centre of that motorcycle. This is documented guidance for that model and does not by itself establish a rule applicable to every motorcycle.

On the BMW R 1250 R, the manual also warns that an unevenly distributed load can affect the motorcycle's handling at high speed. If you are travelling with a passenger, consult your setup's instructions before maintaining the same distribution you would use when riding alone.

Avoid securing items in a way that allows them to move, fall or conceal lights, indicators or the registration plate. For vehicles less than one metre wide, the Regulations set a maximum lateral projection of 0.50 metres on each side of the axis, prohibit front projection and limit rear projection to 0.25 metres. Meeting those dimensions does not remove the obligation to preserve stability and visibility.

Organise by function and check the motorcycle before setting off

Organise contents according to the access you expect to need during the trip. Keep documents and frequently used items separate from clothing. Group rain gear on one side and valuables on another, taking into account the protection and closure declared for each product. If you need to protect something from water, do not assume all luggage provides the same level of protection: check the specification for the specific item.

Carry out the final check with the luggage already loaded and all intended occupants on board. Check closures and mounts, make sure there are no loose items, and ensure lights, signalling and the registration plate remain visible. If your motorcycle manual publishes a tyre pressure applicable to the load situation, consult that instruction. On the BMW R 1250 R, the manual links insufficient pressure and uneven loading to unfavourable handling response at high speed.

The aim is not to use every litre. If an item means exceeding a published load, makes the motorcycle harder to handle or has no compatible place, the prudent choice is to leave it out, reduce your luggage or rethink the system.

• Documents and essentials: in an accessible, closed place that is compatible with riding.
• Clothing: organise it so you can find it without emptying the rest of the luggage.
• Rain gear: grouped together so it can be reached without emptying the rest of the luggage.
• Valuables: in the compartment whose closure and protection match what the manufacturer declares.
• Before starting: confirm closures, mounts, total load, visibility of lights and registration plate, and consult the manual if it specifies tyre pressure when loaded.
