Key points

There is no universal annual cost for owning a motorcycle: it depends chiefly on mileage, insurance, maintenance scheduled for that model and local prices. With a simple spreadsheet, you can separate purchase costs, fixed expenses and cost per kilometre to see whether it fits your budget.

The short answer: add fixed costs, usage costs and a reserve, but do not confuse purchase with maintenance

To find out how much it costs to maintain a motorcycle per year, do not start with someone else’s average. Build a budget using data from your own situation: expected mileage, fuel consumption or energy use, local price, the insurance you would actually take out, maintenance-plan operations and expenses required or applicable where you live.

Separate the costs into three groups. Fixed costs are paid even if you use the motorcycle very little: insurance, Vehicle Tax (IVTM) and, if applicable, a garage or parking space. Variable costs rise with distance and use: petrol or charging, mileage-related servicing and consumables. Finally, keep a reserve for foreseeable replacements and administrative costs that do not fit neatly into either group.

The purchase price, registration, equipment and initial paperwork are not annual maintenance. They should appear on a separate sheet, or be explicitly spread over time if you want to compare options over several years. This prevents a monthly instalment or advertised price from hiding the money you will need at the outset.

  • Annual operating cost = fixed costs + energy + scheduled maintenance + consumables + local expenses.
  • Cost per kilometre = annual operating cost ÷ expected annual mileage.
  • Total first-year cost = annual operating cost + initial items paid during that year.
  • Always note the date and source of every amount: an insurance premium, a litre of fuel and a municipal by-law can change.

First define your use case and annual mileage

The same motorcycle may be inexpensive for occasional use and demanding for someone who commutes every day. Before asking for prices, note down twelve months of mileage, not just that of a good week. Split usage between town, road riding and trips; add where the motorcycle is kept overnight and whether you will pay for parking, a garage or charging away from home.

There is no need to invent precision. It is better to work with a cautious estimate and, if in doubt, create a low and a high scenario. If you are replacing your current motorcycle, mileage from ITV (Spain’s roadworthiness test) records can help reconstruct past usage. For a used motorcycle you are going to buy, the full DGT report lets you check, among other data, its ITV history and mileage.

The three scenarios in the table are not guide prices and do not promise a specific outcome. They are templates for entering your own amounts. Copy one, fill in the cells and add only items supported by a document, tariff or local price.

  • Occasional urban use: estimate weekend rides, errands and months in which you will barely ride.
  • Daily commuting: calculate outward and return trips, working days, detours and year-round use.
  • Trips: add route mileage, connecting journeys and everyday travel; include luggage and parking if you will pay for them.
  • Review the budget when your actual mileage changes or your insurance expires.

Insurance and energy: the two items worth quoting using your own details

Every motorcycle habitually kept in Spain must have compulsory insurance in force. However, comparing insurance only by premium can lead to an incomplete budget. The law allows additional cover to be agreed, while minimum cover does not extend to injury or death of the driver responsible for the accident or to material damage to the insured motorcycle. Check what each quote actually includes.

Request comparable quotes with the same policyholder, postcode, declared use and exact motorcycle. Read the terms before deciding: excess, breakdown assistance, territorial scope, replacement vehicle if listed, rider protection, theft, own-damage cover, limits, exclusions and requirements following a claim. Record the final premium and the excess separately: the latter is not a certain annual expense, but it is a financial risk you should be able to bear.

For a petrol motorcycle, first calculate the cost per 100 km: the real consumption you expect to achieve in l/100 km × the local price per litre. Multiply the result by your annual mileage and divide by 100. MITECO’s Hydrocarbons Geoportal lets you check filling-station prices; save the date, locality and fuel type so the figure can be verified.

For an electric motorcycle, replace fuel with charging cost. Use the consumption you declare in kWh/100 km and the price that applies to your supply profile or the charging points you will use. The CNMC recommends comparing consumption with the offers available for the consumer’s profile; it is therefore not advisable to use a universal electricity tariff.

  • Petrol: (l/100 km × €/l) = €/100 km; then, €/100 km × km/year ÷ 100.
  • Electricity: (kWh/100 km × €/kWh) = €/100 km; then apply annual mileage.
  • If you alternate between town and road riding, you can make two energy calculations and add them together.
  • Do not mix official consumption, old bills and prices from different places without identifying what each figure represents.

Maintenance, wear and taxes: use the model documentation and local by-law

Do not budget for servicing based on engine size or generic advice. Find the official manual for the exact model, year and version, and copy its time- and mileage-based intervals as well as the scheduled operations. That document is the basis for asking a workshop for a price.

Turn the schedule into money. If an operation falls within the next twelve months because of its date or mileage, include it in full. For work that is reasonably approaching but will not fall due this year, you can create a separate reserve instead of presenting it as a certain invoice. Request comparable quotes that state the operations, parts, fluids, labour and taxes.

Apply the same approach to tyres, brakes, final-drive components and battery: check their condition and documented replacement date or mileage, not an assumed lifespan. That is why their amount should be a personal forecast that can be reviewed.

IVTM is a direct tax on ownership of vehicles suitable for use on public roads. Motorcycles have engine-capacity categories in national legislation, but the applicable amount must be confirmed in your local council’s by-law. Add on the same line any parking charge or expense that depends on your municipality, area or garage contract. If your motorcycle is due for an ITV inspection, check the documentation and applicable current requirements.

  • Official manual: intervals by months and mileage, and included operations.
  • Workshop: a written quote for services due during the year.
  • Wear: inspection and invoices to establish the condition of tyres, brakes, final-drive components and battery.
  • Local administration: IVTM by-law, parking and any applicable discount or condition.
  • Reserve: add an identified amount for unforeseen costs without calling it a guaranteed cost.

Before buying: calculate the first year without hiding upfront costs

Registration of a new motorcycle and its number plates must be sorted out before riding. Include those amounts in the initial cost, together with the purchase price, any equipment you do not yet own and any paperwork that applies to you. The special tax on certain means of transport also has specific rules for motorcycles linked, among other factors, to their official CO2 emissions; check the sales and tax documentation applicable to that unit, without extrapolating from another version.

When buying used, request maintenance documentation and check the available information before finalising the calculation. The full DGT report lets you review ITV history, mileage, keepers, encumbrances, technical data and pending campaigns. If the documented condition points to an upcoming service or replacement, put it in the first year even if the purchase price seems attractive.

Also set aside a line for transfer of ownership and applicable taxes or fees. The DGT states that the buyer must complete the ownership transfer within 30 days. It is a cost of the purchase transaction, not a recurring annual item, but ignoring it distorts the money needed to get started.

  • New motorcycle: final price, registration, number plates, equipment and applicable tax documents.
  • Used motorcycle: DGT report, registration document, technical inspection card, maintenance history, ITV records and repair receipts.
  • In both cases: an insurance quote before signing and a budget for upcoming work.
  • Clearly distinguish the “first year” from a “normal year of use” when comparing two motorcycles.

Final checklist: the budget you should complete and review

A useful estimate does not need to predict the future: it needs to make clear what is known, what has been quoted and what remains a reserve. Complete this list before buying, return to it after the first few months of use and correct mileage and prices with real data. If an item has no source, mark it as pending rather than filling it in with a figure from the internet.

Avoid using only published consumption and a generic premium. It is also wise not to forget initial equipment, confuse an optional warranty with compulsory cover, assume that maintenance falls due only by mileage or carry over IVTM from another municipality. A cautious budget, with documents and a date, is more valuable than an apparently exact total.

Once complete, compare the annual operating total and first-year total between candidates. If you finance the purchase, keep instalments and financing costs on a separate sheet from the cost of use: this lets you check both whether you can afford the initial outlay and whether you can sustain the motorcycle each year.

  • Annual mileage and split between town, road riding and trips.
  • Local energy price, consultation date and calculation formula.
  • Insurance quote, cover, excess, assistance, limits and exclusions.
  • Official manual, upcoming services and workshop quotes.
  • Documented condition of consumables and a separate reserve.
  • Municipal IVTM, parking, garage and ITV inspection where applicable.
  • Price and initial paperwork; for used motorcycles, DGT report and ownership transfer.
  • Annual operating total, first-year total and cost per kilometre.
What is the minimum fixed expense I should include every year?

Include at least compulsory insurance and the IVTM that applies in your municipality. Add garage, parking or other local payments only if they apply to your case.

Does compulsory insurance cover my injuries and damage to my motorcycle?

Personal injury to the at-fault rider and material damage to the insured motorcycle are not part of the compulsory minimum cover. Check whether the policy you take out includes additional guarantees for those circumstances.

Where can I find the maintenance required for a specific motorcycle?

Look for the official owner’s manual for the exact model, year and version. It should help you identify time- and mileage-based intervals and request a quote for the scheduled operations.

What should I check on a used motorcycle to calculate the first year?

As well as the price, check the full DGT report, registration document, technical inspection card, maintenance history, ITV records, mileage, encumbrances and technical data. Identify and budget for any upcoming documented maintenance or repairs, and separately account for the cost of transferring ownership.
