Reading a maintenance schedule does not mean using one generic mileage figure for every car. The starting point should be the documentation applicable to the vehicle. Renault recommends downloading the owner's manual with a date closest to the registration date, but never later.
Gather the date of first registration, current mileage and vehicle identification number, or VIN. Where the manufacturer's official portal provides this option, the VIN may be used to find the Owner's Manual and Service Booklet. If physical documentation is missing, look for these documents through the official channels available for your vehicle.
If the manufacturer gives a time limit and a mileage limit using the wording “whichever occurs first”, you should follow the limit that comes due first. Ford expressly uses this criterion in its guidance relating to the oil-change warning.

How to read the intervals and work listed in the schedule
There is no single universal interval. Volkswagen Spain distinguishes, for example, between maintenance with flexible oil changes and maintenance with fixed oil changes. In the example published by the brand, the flexible schedule is associated with two years or 30,000 km, while the fixed schedule is associated with one year or 15,000 km. These are figures from that Volkswagen example and should not be transferred to other makes, engines or models.
The contents of a schedule are not identical for every vehicle either. Volkswagen's information lists, among other operations, replacement of spark plugs, pollen, diesel and air filters, brake fluid, and automatic gearbox oil and filter where applicable. It is therefore advisable to read the component and action stated on every line of the documentation available for the car.
Where an operation is listed as “where applicable”, do not assume it applies to your vehicle merely because it appears in a general list. Review the available documentation and ask for clarification before including it in an estimate.

Time, mileage and use: when an oil change may be brought forward
The time limit and mileage must be read exactly as the manufacturer presents them. Where the documentation uses “whichever occurs first”, you should not wait for the mileage if the time limit comes due first, or wait for the date if the distance limit is reached first.
Ford warns that, in variable oil systems, engine oil may require changing before the published maximum service intervals. Factors cited by the brand include frequent low-speed driving, regular trips of under 3 km, heavy loads, towing and frequent uphill driving.
These factors relate to Ford's information about its variable oil systems. They do not allow a shorter interval to be automatically applied to another make or vehicle.
